Latin Mass Society announces six new patrons

The Latin Mass Society (LMS) has announced the establishment of six patrons, including well-known figures from the worlds of music, journalism, politics and the law.

This marks a major advance for the LMS and for the cause of the Traditional Latin Mass in England and Wales which are both attracting the support of mainstream figures within the Church.

The new patrons include Dr James MacMillan CBE, who composed the setting for the Beatification Mass of John Henry Newman and is well known for his tireless campaigning for excellence in Church music. Charles Moore, a convert to Catholicism, is a former editor of the Daily Telegraph and a prominent national journalist and political commentator. Prince Rupert Loewenstein is a former President and long time supporter of the Latin Mass Society. Lord (Brian) Gill is the second most senior judge in Scotland and was recently honoured with a papal knighthood. He has supported the Traditional Latin Mass for many years. Colin Mawby is another composer who is highly respected in Catholic music circles. He was Director of Music at Westminster Cathedral under Cardinal Heenan and more recently has been very supportive of the LMS’s attempts to nurture a wider knowledge of Gregorian Chant. Sir Adrian FitzGerald is President of the Irish Association of the Knights of Malta, a former mayor of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and was previously a Chairman of the Governors of the Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School.

Announcing the establishment of the LMS’s new patrons, Chairman Dr Joseph Shaw said: ‘I’m delighted they have agreed to be patrons. This is a real indication of the Society’s standing in the Catholic community and the Church. Since Summorum Pontificum, our support of the Traditional Mass is no longer considered an eccentricity, to be tolerated at best, but an important apostolate for the good of the whole Church and recognised as such by the Holy Father.’

Our Southwark-based sodality, the Sodality of the Five Holy Wounds, has announced its Mass will take place on 16 March 2012 at Our Lady of the Rosary, Blackfen, at 20:00. It will be a Missa Cantata, Votive Mass of the Five Holy Wounds. Mass will be offered for the intentions of all members of the Sodality. On 11 February 2012, Holy Mass was celebrated in St George's Cathedral, Southwark, followed by a Gregorian Chant Training Day.

The Mass, celebrated for the intentions of local Latin Mass Society Members in honour of the Apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary Immaculate, was sung by Fr Martin Edwards, Parish Priest of St Mary Magdalene, Wandsworth. Gordon Dimon was the Master of Ceremonies. The men of the Cathedral Choir sang Missa "Vidi civitatem sanctam" with the Ordinary chants of "Cum jubilo"; during the Offertory they also sang the Latin hymn, "Ave maris stella".

Mass was followed by a Gregorian Chant Training Day, organised by the Gregorian Chant Network. The Cathedral Director of Music, Nick Gale, ably assisted by his colleague Mark Johnson, inspired and enlightened some 15 chant enthusiasts, which included singers from London churches and the members of the Juventutem London Schola, and others from as far afield as Salisbury.

The day finished with First Vespers of Sexagesima Sunday. Fr Andrew Southwell, Assistant Priest of St Bede's, Clapham Park, and Latin Mass Society National Chaplain, officiated.

Communion on the tongue

Two priests, Fr Andrew Wise and Fr John Speekman, have initiated a new blog: communiononthetongue.blogspot.com.

They write:

During the course of our parish ministry we have become increasingly uneasy with the practice of Communion on the hand. We have come to the conclusion that what started out as a seemingly good idea has actually been found to encourage a certain carelessness, and not only among the laity.

It has also been our experience that because of the inherently 'routine' action of placing something in someone's hand this carelessness is, in fact, very 'catechesis resistant'.

It is our hope that this blog will stimulate discussion and awareness of what many in the Church see as a problem needing urgent reform.

We hope also that, as the blog grows through your contributions and comments, a clearer picture will emerge of this urgency.

Their initiative has attracted the attention of Prelates of Cardinal Arinze, and Bishop Athanasius Schneider has signed a petition requesting the Holy Father to "personally intervene to restore once again the normative practice of reception of Holy Communion on the tongue alone".

On Saturday 11 February 2012, Feast of the Apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary Immaculate, there will be a Solemn Mass in St George's Cathedral, Southwark. Low Mass on Monday 5 December at 7:30pm.

Missa Cantata on Thursday 8 December (for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception - not a Holy Day of Obligation) at 8pm. This will take the place of Rosary & Benediction. Fr. Finigan will be able to hear confessions after this Mass.

Blackfen Patronal Feast

Friday 7 October is the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary and therefore the patronal feast of the parish of Blackfen. They will be having High Mass in the usus antiquior at 8pm.

The music (Victoria, Guerrero, Byrd, Schubert) will be sung by Cantores Missae.

Do come along if you can.

This year, Fr Finigan is trying to encourage people to bring non-Catholic friends to the Mass to hear beautiful music sung for the purpose for which it was composed (the worship of God) and in the setting for which it was composed (High Mass).

You can gain a plenary indulgence (under the usual conditions) even for just visiting the Church on 7 October and reciting the Pater and Credo. (This applies to any parish Church on its titular solemnity.)

Juventutem London Schola: singers needed

Juventutem London are assembling an all-male Schola to sing the Gregorian chant at our monthly High Mass at St Patrick's, Soho Square. The Schola will rehearse only once a month, before the Mass (generally, the fourth Friday of the month), so we are looking for men who have at least either some experience in singing chant or who have experience as singers and an aptitude for learning how to read neumes.

Members will have the pleasure of making a significant contribution to the Sacred Liturgy. They will be entitled to a discounted meal after Mass, and training sessions with the Gregorian Chant Network during the year. At several Masses throughout the year, we shall be joined by Cantus Magnus, a professional choir who will sing a polyphonic Ordinary.

The Schola is open to men between the ages of 18 and 35, and entry will be by audition only. We will be holding auditions in Central London at St Mary Moorfields, 4-5 Eldon Street, London, EC2M 7LS (nearest tubes: Moorfields and Liverpool Street) on Saturday 17 September 2011 at 11am. LMS AGM High Mass and AGM at St George’s Cathedral, Southwark, London Saturday 2 July 2011

The Latin Mass Society was warmly welcomed to St George’s Cathedral, Southwark, London on Saturday 2 July by the Cathedral Dean, Canon John O’Toole and the Administrator, Mr Alex Scott for its Annual General Meeting and AGM Mass. The LMS is grateful to all the cathedral staff for their help and encouragement in making our AGM arrangements.

The day commenced at 11.00am with High Mass of the Visitation of Our Lady celebrated by Fr Andrew Southwell, LMS National chaplain, assisted by Fr Michael Cullllinan as Deacon and Fr Gregory Kilaja as Sub-deacon.

The men of the Cathedral Choir sang Victoria’s Missa Quam Pulcri Sunt. The Gloria was taken from the Missa de Angelis, the Creed was Credo I and the Offertory motet was Victoria’s Ave Maris Stella.

After lunch, the LMS AGM convened in the cathedral’s Amigo Hall to hear reports from the Secretary, Mr David Forster, the Treasurer, Mr Paul Waddington and the Chairman, Dr the Hon. Joseph Shaw. The LMS’s National Chaplain, Fr Andrew Southwell, had opened the proceedings with a prayer and after the reports gave an address in which he discussed Pope Benedict’s XVI admirable work in the fields of doctrine and the liturgy. The meeting then sang ‘God Bless Our Pope’ to commemorate the sixtieth anniversary of Pope Benedict’s ordination to the Sacred Priesthood and closed with the singing of the Credo.

This year’s AGM was relatively low-key and in a new venue. However, Dr Shaw, in particular, was able to update those present on the increasing level of work being carried out throughout England and Wales by the LMS and its local representatives. The LMS is now more focussed on providing support to those many priests and faithful throughout the country who are gradually reintroducing the Extraordinary Form into their parish life. Its aim is to publicise the liturgical initiatives of Pope Benedict and to support and encourage the growing number of young people and young families who are discovering the Old Rite.

Sodality of the Five Holy Wounds: pilgrimage to Tyburn

On Saturday 21st May, the Sodality of the Five Holy Wounds held a most successful pilgrimage to Tyburn; some 40 people attended. Following a Missa Cantata, sung at the Altar of the Martyrs, Mother Lioba gave us a very interesting talk on the English and Welsh Martyrs and on the foundation of the Convent at Tyburn. The day ended with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament and a visit to the memorial spot where the Martyrs were actually executed. We were delighted to have with us Msgr. Leo White, a former Prefect Apostolic, who himself received into the Church a young woman who was later martyred for her Catholic Faith.

The day will begin with a Missa Cantata – Votive Mass of the English Martyrs – at 11:00am, sung at the altar of the Martyrs. At 2:00pm there will be a talk about the martyrs' crypt and the numerous relics, followed by benediction at 3:00pm in the main chapel. We shall finish with a procession the site of the Tyburn Tree.

Universae Ecclesiae: the LMS responds

The Latin Mass Society has welcomed unequivocally the publication by the Pontifical Commission ‘Ecclesia Dei’ of its Instruction on the application of the Holy Father’s Motu Proprio, ‘Summorum Pontificum’.

The Instruction is a resounding justification for the work of the LMS and other adherents of the Extraordinary Form in insisting on their right to the Traditional Liturgy and Sacraments of the Church. There are many bishops and priests who should feel chastened for the way they have treated those attached to the Extraordinary Form over the years – as the then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger once wrote, they were treated as “lepers”.

However, ‘Summorum Pontificum’ establishes a new and authoritative basis for the reintroduction of the Extraordinary Form into the heart of the Church and the LMS is determined to look forward rather than back.

Just as with ‘Summorum Pontificum’ there is a great deal in the new Instruction which will be teased out with time. And here the LMS notes that the authoritative Latin text of the Instruction is, in crucial areas, more strongly worded than the unofficial English translation.

The LMS draws attention to these selected points:

*The Instruction stresses that ‘Summorum Pontificum’ is the universal law of the Church and cannot be ignored (Art. 2).

*The Instruction confirms that the Extraordinary Form is not a poor relation of the Ordinary Form but is an “expression of the same lex orandi of the Church” “alongside” the ordinary form (Art. 6).

*’Summorum Pontificum’ is “an important expression of the Magisterium of the Roman Pontiff and of his munus for regulating...the Church’s Sacred Liturgy” and offers “to all the faithful” [LMS emphasis] the use of the Extraordinary Form, “effectively guaranteeing...the use of the forma extraordinaria for all who ask for it” (Art. 8), i.e. this is not just for the elderly or those previously attached to the Society of St Pius X.

*The Pontifical Commission ‘Ecclesia Dei’ now exercises the power “as hierarchical superior” to decide upon complaints referred to it regarding any “administrative provision of an Ordinary which appears to be contrary to the Motu Proprio” subject to final appeal to the Apostolic Signatura (Art. 10. 1).

*“It is the task of the Diocesan Bishop to undertake all necessary measures to ensure respect for the forma extraordinaria of the Roman Rite, according to the Motu Proprio, ‘Summorum Pontificum’” (Art. 14).

*A stable group of the faithful who request use of the Extraordinary Form is simply constituted by “some people” who come together and can “be composed of persons coming from different parishes or dioceses” (Art. 15).

*Priests are to be considered “qualified” to offer the Traditional Mass if they have a “basic knowledge” of Latin “and have celebrated it previously”. Among others this would refer to priests who have taught themselves the Old Rite and celebrated it privately or, for example, have learned it at an LMS training course (Art. 20).

*Ordinaries are to offer their clergy training in the Extraordinary Form and are also urged to provide training in the seminaries (Art. 21).

*Dioceses without qualified priests should ask the Traditional Orders such as the Fraternity of St Peter to provide priests or training for diocesan priests (Art. 22).

*The particular law and customs of the 1962 books are protected from subsequent law and therefore such practices as Communion in the hand, Communion under both kinds and female altar servers are not permissible in the Extraordinary Form [LMS emphasis] (Art. 28).

*The Sacred Triduum can be celebrated in the Extraordinary Form and where necessary these celebrations can take place in churches where the Sacred Triduum in the ordinary form is also celebrated (Art. 33).

*Individuals of the religious Orders may use the Order’s liturgical books in effect in 1962 (Art. 34).

Doctor Joseph Shaw, Chairman of the LMS, said “This is a wonderful day for the Church. With this Instruction, the Pontifical Commission ‘Ecclesia Dei’ has confirmed what we all knew – that ‘Summorum Pontificum’ is a gift to the whole Church designed to end the ‘liturgy wars’ and establish the full membership of the Extraordinary Form in the family of rites. The LMS will be urging its diocesan representatives to liaise with the diocesan bishops to maximise the reintroduction of the Old Rite in their dioceses. We will also keep records of any problems so that recourse may be made to the disciplinary function of Ecclesia Dei if necessary. There is a tremendous task to be carried out to improve the standard of liturgy in England and Wales and the LMS pledges its full cooperation in this cause so close to Pope Benedict’s heart”.

Church of St Thomas Aquinas, Ham

The last Mass was that of Easter Sunday, 24 April, at 6pm.

The Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei has published the Instruction on the application of the Apostolic Letter Summorum Pontificum of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI given Motu Proprio.

Southwark priest, Fr Timothy Finigan, has given his roundup of the news at his blog. Here are the main points, in his words:

n.4 Pope Paul VI approved a "new missal" - novum Missale - i.e. we now have an authoritative statement that it was not simply a reform of the old one. I suspect somebody regrets failing to get that bit struck out :-)

n.7 The "sacred and great" line is quoted. Huzzah!

n.8a The usus antiquior is a "precious treasure to be preserved"

n.8b Summorum Pontificum (SP) guarantees the EF for all who ask for it and must be interpreted in a sense favourable to the faithful

n.10.1 The PCED has hierarchical superiority against Ordinaries who try to act contrary to SP

n.13 Bishops are to act in agreement with the mind of the Holy Father in SP and in case of controversy, the PCED will adjudicate

n.15 (Obviously but good to have it stated) the stable group may be people who came together even after the publication of SP

n.20a Priests are presumed to be idoneus

n.20b For Latin, priests do not have to have a classics degree; they must simply be able to "pronounce the words correctly and
understand their meaning" (Fr Z has been saying this for ages. He was right.)

Clarification document to be published this week

The Holy See Press Office announces that the Instruction Universae Ecclesiae of the Pontifical Commission "Ecclesia Dei", on the application of the motu proprio Summorum Pontificum, will be made public on Friday, 13 May, and will be published on that afternoon (14 May edition of L'Osservatore Romano).The Instruction will be published in its Latin typical version, and in Italian, English, French, German, Spanish, and Portuguese translations.
Note for photo (left): 13 May was the date of Our Lady's first appearance at Fatima in 1917. The Traditional Mass was the only Mass the seers of Fatima ever attended.

Priests' Training Conference at Buckfast Abbey

The LMS’s Seventh Training Conference for Priests and Servers Successfully Concluded
Over thirty clerics and laymen attended the Latin Mass Society’s seventh residential training conference for the training of priests in the Traditional or Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite. This conference took place from Tuesday 3 May to Friday 6 May at Buckfast Abbey in Devon, courtesy of Abbot David Charlesworth and the Benedictine community.

The programme, as in recent conferences, also provided for the training of altar servers. Fifteen servers were trained. This included a number of young men, three of whom are discerning vocations to the priesthood.

The twelve priests came from across the UK: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland were all represented. Two of the priests were Polish and one was an Army chaplain who has recently seen active service in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Training was given at various levels under the leadership of Fr Andrew Southwell, National Chaplain to the LMS. There was basic instruction (including Latin pronunciation where required), through to intermediate training culminating in instruction in the celebration of High Mass.

The servers followed a similar progression, learning to assist at celebrations up to High Mass.

Each day sung Mass was celebrated in the abbey church and the quality of the polyphonic singing and Latin plain chant was outstanding. The choir and schola were led by Michael Vian Clark. Abbot David Charlesworth presided in choir at the closing Votive Mass of the Holy Cross on the Friday and led the veneration of the Relic of the True Cross.

As usual at LMS conferences, the food and accommodation were appreciated for their high quality throughout.

The LMS would like to express its profound gratitude for the welcome and ready assistance given by the monks at Buckfast Abbey.

Pilgrimage in honour of St Margaret Clitherow, March 2011

The Latin Mass Society is organising a pilgrimage in honour of St Margaret Clitherow, one of its patron saints. It will be held in York on Saturday 26th March 2011.

The pilgrimage will begin at 1.30pm with a Missa Cantata at the High Altar of York Minster. This will be followed by a procession from the minster, via The Shambles and Ouse Bridge to the Church of the English Martyrs in Dalton Terrace, where Benediction and veneration of the relic of St Margaret Clitherow will take place at 4pm.

Use of York Minster is by kind permission of the Dean and Chapter.

It was originally intended that Benediction would be at the Bar Convent, but because of the nunbers that are expected to attend, this has been transferred to the English Martyrs’ Church.

Because of the parking restrictions in force in York, visitors travelling by car are advised to use the Park and Ride facilities. The Askham Bar car park, on the Tadcaster Road near to the A64 to the south-west of York, will be the most convenient as the buses from there pass near to both the Minster and English Martyrs’ Church. It would be wise to allow half an hour to get from the car park to the Minster by bus.

Priests' Trainting Conference at Buckfast Abbey: May 2011

The Latin Mass Society will be holding its seventh residential Priests’ Training Conference at Buckfast Abbey from 3rd to 6th May 2011. The Abbot and community have extended a particularly warm welcome, and this new venue promises to be a great success.

Tuition will be provided by priests well experienced in the traditional rites and will be in small groups selected to suit the experience of each participant. Thus it is expected that there will be groups studying Low Mass, Missa Cantata and Solemn Mass.

There will also be tuition for servers who wish to to improve their skills. Again tuition will be in groups according to ability and experience.

The conference will start with Mass at 11am on the Tuesday morning and will end after lunch on the Friday. For those travelling long distances, it will be possible to book a room for the Monday night. Accommodation will be provided in the guest houses of the Abbey and the Abbot has kindly allowed the conference to have extensive use of the Abbey Church both for tuition and for our liturgies.

I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

On Friday 11 February 2011 – Feast of the Apparition of the Immaculate Virgin Mary at Lourdes – Holy Mass was offered at 6.00 pm in the Cathedral Church of St George, Southwark, arranged by the Latin Mass Society. Father Anthony Logan, a Golden-Jubilarian priest of the archdiocese, celebrated a Missa lecta at the High Altar, offering the Mass for the intentions of all local Latin Mass Society members.

Mass was attended by over 40 people, young and old alike. Canon James Cronin, Dean of the Cathedral, graciously assisted, robed and seated in the Sanctuary, and local member Jason Kenny served. Several members of Cathedral staff were also present.

Before the Creed, we had the benefit of a thought-provoking homily given by Father Logan, in which was compared the respective texts of this feast in the Usus antiquior and the Usus recentior, along with perceived changes of theological emphases.

After the Mass, we sang the Ave Regina Cælorum before the High Altar and were able to enjoy the Cathedral's peaceful atmosphere for in the early evening. Several congregants came up to me to say how prayerful the Mass felt, and also how much they appreciated having Mass offered in our Cathedral. I should like to thank Father Logan for celebrating Mass, and also Canon Cronin and Rev. James Sheahan (Sacristan) for making us so welcome. We hope very much to be at more celebrations at the Cathedral in future.

Hostia laudis, quam tibi, Domine, per meriper merita gloriosæ et immaculate Virginis offerimus, sit tibi in odorem suavitatis, et nobis optatam conferat corporis et animæ sanitatem.

May the sacrifice of praise, which we offer Thee, O Lord, by the merits of the glorious and Immaculate Virgin, rise up to heaven as a sweet savour: and may it obtain for us that physical and moral health which we desire.

Latin Mass Society Announces 2011 Priests Training Conference

The Latin Mass Society has announced its seventh residential conference for priests who wish to learn the Extraordinary Form of Mass. The conference will take place at Buckfast Abbey, Buckfastleigh, Devon from Tuesday 3rd to Friday 6th May.

Tuition will be given in small groups selected according to ability, and will cover Low Mass, Missa Cantata and Missa Solemnis. It is also hoped to provide tuition in the sacraments of baptism and marriage. Only rudimentary Latin is required.

There will also be a residential course for laymen wishing to learn to serve the Extraordinary Form.

The conference will begin late morning on the Tuesday, although there will be the opportunity for those travelling long distances to stay at Buckfast Abbey on the Monday night. The conference will end after lunch on the Friday.

There will be sung Mass in the Extraordinary Form each day; parts of the Office will also be sung.

The inclusive fee is £85 which covers all tuition, accommodation and board.

LMS Chairman, Doctor Joseph Shaw said: “The LMS’s training conferences are now well-established in the Church’s calendar of activities. We have already trained over a hundred priests and many more Extraordinary Form Masses are being offered around the country due to our training activities”.

Sodality of the Five Holy Wounds

Within the Archdiocese we are pleased to have a monthly prayer and formation group attached to the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite.

The Sodality of the Five Holy Wounds of Our Lord Jesus Christ takes as its model the traditional sodalities that were once quite common in the Catholic Church.

A group of lay faithful who were part of the Traditional Mass Chaplaincy based at the Roman Catholic Church of St Bede in the Archdiocese of Southwark decided to meet together under the provisions of the Code of Canon Law (1983): ‘Since, like all the Christian faithful, lay persons are designated by God for the apostolate through baptism and confirmation, they are bound by the general obligation and possess the right as individuals, or joined in associations, to work so that the divine message of salvation is made known and accepted by all persons everywhere in the world’ (Canon 225 §1).

Taking as their patrons Our Lady of Sorrows and St Bede, the group met for the first time at St Bede’s on 1st February 2010, Feast of St Ignatius. Father Andrew Southwell was appointed as Father Director of the Sodality. Meetings take place once a month.

The next meeting of the Sodality will be on Wednesday 16 February 2011 at 7.30pm. Father Andrew Southwell will talk about the interior life, and the evening will end around 9.00pm with refreshments. All adults are welcome.

Local members are cordially invited to join in singing carols at Waterloo Station on Tuesday 21st December 2010 from 5pm until 7pm!

The charity being collected for is LIFE.

We usually stand near the Christmas tree on the main concourse (always a bit of a battle with the station announcements!)

All are welcome to come and sing, shake a tin or play an instrument. We have a violinist lined up and in the past we have experienced problems if guitarists play alongside but a wind instrument (flute??) would be great.

Joanna Bogle conducts us in her inimitable style, full of verve and gusto. Hot tea and coffee, biscuits and sweets will be provided for all!

Even join in for 10 minutes if passing through, it does not have to be for the full 2hours!

2011 LMS pilgrimage from Ely to Walsingham

You are invited to the second Latin Mass Society walking pilgrimage for the conversion of England. We will be walking from Ely to Walsingham from 26th to 28th August 2011. This is a bank-holiday weekend.

Pilgrims will meet in the evening of Thursday 25th August at St Ethelreda's Catholic Church, 19 Egremont Street, Ely. The pilgrimage will begin with the Traditional Mass in St Ethelreda's Catholic Church on Friday morning.

There will be a sung Traditional Latin Mass each day and Confession will be available throughout the pilgrimage.

Mass on the second day will be in the Catholic chapel at Oxburgh Hall. The pilgrimage will conclude with Mass at Walsingham on Sunday afternoon.

This pilgrimage is open to all ages and to families.

Camping is compulsory for men, and optional for women and children. Women and children will be able to sleep indoors on the Thursday and Saturday nights. We are still looking for an indoor option for the Saturday.

Westminster Bishop celebrates the Latin Mass Society’s Annual Requiem Mass in Westminster Cathedral

The Rt Rev. John Arnold, auxiliary bishop in Westminster, celebrated a Pontifical High Mass of Requiem in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite in Westminster Cathedral on Saturday 6 November for the repose of the souls of all deceased members and supporters of the LMS. Father Nicholas Schofield was Assistant Priest, Fr Andrew Southwell, LMS National Chaplain, was Deacon and the Sub-deacon was Fr David Irwin. Gordon Dimon of the LMS was MC.

A congregation of some hundreds heard the men of the Cathedral Choir sing the plainsong Requiem Mass.

The Mass was followed by a homily by Bishop Arnold and then the traditional ceremonies of Absolutions at the Catafalque. The coffin for the occasion was supplied by the Fairways Partnership, Funeral Directors.

Before Mass, a wreath was laid by Dr Joseph Shaw, Chairman of the LMS, and other LMS Committee members on the grave of Cardinal Heenan in the cathedral nave in thanksgiving for the Cardinal’s efforts to preserve the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite. Father Patrick Hayward read prayers for the occasion.

Doctor Shaw said afterwards: “This was the second time that Bishop Arnold has celebrated the LMS’s annual Requiem Mass and we are most grateful to him. We also thank Canon Christopher Tuckwell, the Cathedral Administrator, and Fr Alexander Master, the Cathedral Precentor, for their help”.

Regular Masses continue in Blackfen, Clapham Park, Wandsworth, Ham and Chislehurst.

The Sodality of the Five Wounds continues to meet at St Bede’s once a month. The September meeting of the traditional Sodality of the Five Holy Wounds of Our Lord Jesus Christ was a great success. There was a Missa Cantata on for the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, followed by veneration of a relic of the True Cross, and a shared supper; it was attended by some 40 people. The Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Holy Rosary was a joyous event at Blackfen – its patronal feast. Parish Priest and Celebrant, Fr Timothy Finigan, was joined by Fr Nicholas Schofield and Fr Richard Whinder (Deacon and Subdeacon respectively); Fra Lawrence Lew, OP, preached the homily. Cantores Missae, directed by Charles Finch, sang the Mass, which was Victoria’s Missa Ave Maris Stella.

The next Mass at St Raphael’s will be a Low Mass at 7.30pm on the Feast of All Souls 2 November.

At St Bede’s there will be a Sung Mass on the Feast of All Saints and on the Feast of All Souls, both at 12.30pm.

During Advent, there will be Vespers and Benediction every Sunday in Advent at St Bede’s, starting at 5.00pm.

We look forward to a special Christmas, with Mass in nocte at St Bede’s (at 9.00pm) and at Blackfen (at midnight).

From correspondence I have recently received, it is understood that there is interest in having Sunday Mass in the Usus Antiquior in the Croydon/Sutton area of the Archdiocese. If there are any priests willing to facilitate this request please do get in touch.

The calendar shows the rich variety of events going on around the country, with Pontifical Mass in a Gothic Abbey Church and a thoroughly modern Parish Church; St Charles Borromeo in Stoke and Westminster Cathedral; Mass in a historic private chapel during a pilgrimage, a procession, a baptism and the Blessing of Throats on the Feast of St Blaise – a good few other things as well, including events of both the Fraternity of St Peter and the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest. It includes information about the LMS and related events coming up in 2011.

It has all the national feast and fast days of the 1962 Calendar, is sturdy and well printed. Numbers are finite and we ran out last year, so get yours now!

First Latin Mass Society Walking Pilgrimage to Walsingham a Great Triumph

The first Latin Mass Society Walking Pilgrimage from Ely to Walsingham took place from Friday 20 August to Sunday 22 August. It started with a blessing in the Catholic Parish Church of St Ethelreda. The pilgrims then walked from Ely to Downham Market where Mass in the Extraordinary Form was sung in the parish church by the pilgrimage chaplain, Fr Alex Redman. Father Alex also led devotions and heard confessions en route.

On the second day the pilgrims continued to Oxburgh Hall, owned by the Bedingfeld family, and which has been in Catholic hands since the Middle Ages. A sung Traditional Mass was celebrated in the private chapel.

On Sunday the pilgrims continued their way to Walsingham where they prayed in the Slipper Chapel and walked the ‘Holy Mile’ from the village to the Catholic shrine. Many, by tradition, were barefooted. Finally, sung Mass was celebrated in the Chapel of Reconciliation by Fr Redman.

Most of the pilgrims were young and greatly enthused by the combination of the physical effort involved and Mass and devotions in the Traditional form. LMS Chairman, Dr Joseph Shaw, completed the walk and said: “This is simply a trial run. There is a noble tradition of walking pilgrimages to Walsingham which the LMS wishes to revive, so next year we are planning a much bigger and even more heartfelt pilgrimage and we invite all young people, and not so young, to join us. We are determined through hard work and penance to return the Catholic Faith to England and Wales”.

Great success for the Traditional Rite at Downside Abbey

The Latin Mass Society’s residential training conference for priests wishing to learn the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite (Traditional Latin Mass) held at Downside Abbey, Somerset, from Tuesday 10 August to Friday 13 August was a great success.

The highlight was the Solemn Pontifical Mass celebrated at the Faldstool by Bishop Athanasius Schneider, auxiliary bishop of Karaganda in Kazakhstan on the Thursday. Father Andrew Southwell, LMS National Chaplain, and Rev. Matthew McCarthy FSSP were Deacon and Sub-deacon, with Canon Marcus Kunkel ICKSP as Assistant Priest. There were over thirty priests in choir and a congregation of more than 100.

During the conference twenty priests received intensive tuition in the celebration of the Usus Antiquior and eleven laymen were instructed in serving the Mass.

Bishop Schneider gave a well-received keynote lecture on the priest as ‘Eucharistic man’ and was also the main speaker at the closing conference dinner. His book, Dominus Est, which advocates receiving Holy Communion on the tongue whilst kneeling has attracted worldwide attention.

The conference included daily Sung Mass, Lauds and either Vespers or Compline in the evening; there was Benediction after Vespers.

Father Ray Blake, the well-known blogger, who attended the conference, said: “Downside was a tremendous experience. Most of all I enjoyed the sense of fraternity amongst the priests, the solidarity, the sharing of our love for Holy Mother Church and her liturgy”.

Doctor Joseph Shaw, LMS Chairman, said: “This conference was the sixth to be organised by the LMS during the last three years. Over 100 priests have now attended, of whom about 85 now regularly celebrate Mass in the Usus Antiquior. The LMS will organise a further two conferences in 2011”.

Extraordinary events in Blackfen

Notification of a number of 'extraordinary' events at Blackfen this week! These events are not in the regular listings.

On Monday 6th September, at 8pm, there will be a Requiem Mass for Fr. Bailey, with absolutions at the Catafalque.

On Thursday 9th September 8pm there is Benediction. Be sure to listen to BBC Radio 4 at 9pm – this programme made during August, with interviews of various parishioners, Fr. Tim and recordings from the Mass.

Finally, there will be a Missa Cantata on Friday 10th September at 7:30pm.

Successful St Catherine's Trust Summer School

The St Catherine's Trust for Traditional Catholic Education held its sixth Annual Summer School from Sunday 1 to Sunday 8 August at Ardingly College in West Sussex. It was attended by forty enthusiastic students aged from 11 to 18, and a volunteer staff of sixteen, including a chaplain, Fr Andrew Southwell.

The students studied a range of subjects covering every aspect of Catholic belief, history and culture, and heard a piano recital by the professional pianist Matthew Schellhorn, and a talk from the Catholic journalist Dominic Scarborough.

There was daily Sung Mass in the Extraordinary Form, including Mass in Arundel Cathedral, by permission of Bishop Kieran Conry.

As part of the Summer School, the Latin Mass Society held its first ever residential Latin course, directed by Philip Goddard, the LMS's adviser on Latin, which made use of the LMS's teach yourself Latin primer, Simplicissimus. The course was based on the Latin of the liturgy, and examples and exercises were taken from liturgical texts. Students were divided into 'beginners' and 'intermediates', although all joined together for lectures on psalmody and liturgical poetry, the history of liturgical texts, and Latin in Philosophy. Students were delighted with the amount of Latin they were able to absorb, describing the course as 'transforming’ and ‘enriching' their engagement with the liturgy of the Church.

Doctor Joseph Shaw, Chairman of the LMS, said: “The Summer School is always exhausting but exhilarating; it is inspiring to see so many children being so prayerful. This is surely what Pope Benedict wants as part of the re-evangelisation of Europe”.

The St Catherine’s Trust Summer School is financially supported by the Latin Mass Society and other benefactors, and accepts students regardless of their ability to pay. Westminster Bishop to Confer Traditional Rite Confirmations

Bishop George Stack, auxiliary bishop in Westminster, will administer Confirmations in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite (Traditional Latin Rite) at St James’ Church, Spanish Place, London W1 on Saturday 20 November 2010 in a ceremony organised by the Latin Mass Society. This will be the seventh year the LMS has organised ceremonies.

As usual, permission for the Old Rite Confirmations has been given by Archbishop Vincent Nichols of Westminster.

The candidates’ day will begin with a catechetical meeting in the Lady Chapel with Bishop Stack at 11.00 am. The Confirmation ceremony will begin at 11.30 am and will be followed by Pontifical Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.

The choir and organist of Spanish Place will provide the music, and, as ever, a large congregation is expected.

After the ceremonies, a reception for the bishop and newly-confirmed will be held in the crypt during which Bishop Stack will cut the celebratory cake.

St Catherine's Trust Summer School 2010

From Sunday 1st August to Sunday 8th August, I had the enormous privilege of teaching at the St Catherine’s Trust Summer School at Ardingly College. As it was the first time I had been involved I did not know quite what to expect. In the event, I was overwhelmed by the spiritual and educational depth of the week.

The pupils were treated to a schedule full of variety. Following breakfast, everyone prayed Holy Rosary in the Chapel – the pupils leading the prayers in Latin. Lessons in a variety of subjects ranging from to Art History to Music, from Church Architecture to Shakespeare, were on offer throughout the morning.

Every day we had a Missa Cantata celebrated by the School’s Chaplain, Father Andrew Southwell. It was wonderful to see the sanctuary full of enthusiastic servers drawn from amongst the pupils, some of whom were serving the ceremonies for the first time.

In the afternoons, pupils could choose from a range of activities, including drawing, sewing, chant and serving; I was extremely happy to teach the Gregorian Propers for the final Sunday. All pupils ended the afternoon with lessons in Latin and Gregorian chant.

Every day, following supper, there was a different communal event. On two evenings the children watched films – Going My Way (starring Bing Crosby) and A Time for Miracles (about St Elizabeth Seton). On the Tuesday, I gave a piano recital in the Recital Room during which I presented a variety of repertoire, including music by Scarlatti, Mozart, Liszt, Debussy and Chopin. I asked for a show of hands at the beginning to see who had attended a recital before – about 50% of the children had, so it was a great honour to introduce the others to live classical music. On the Thursday evening, journalist Dominic Scarborough gave a fascinating talk entitled ‘Back to the Future’, where he discussed the meaning of our Catholic Tradition and how to draw upon it in the present day.

The days ended with Compline, sung by all in the Chapel, which was on two days preceded by Solemn Benediction. The atmosphere here was particularly prayerful and peaceful.

A highlight of the week was the trip to Arundel on the Thursday. Following some lessons in the morning, we travelled to the Cathedral where Father Andrew sang Mass. The Cathedral treated us extremely well, making available their most beautiful vestments; Father Andrew wore a beautiful old chasuble decorated with delicate emblems – most appropriate for Our Lady of the Snow. After the Mass, the pupils took part in a questionnaire centering on the Parish Church of St Nicholas, the chancel of which (known as the Fitzalan Chapel) still belongs to the Duke of Norfolk and is therefore still a Catholic place of worship.

Towards the end of the week, the pupils took part in a quiz, presented a play (The Empty Tomb by Dorothy L. Sayers), and received some prizes and their Summer School Certificates of Attendance. On the final day – the Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost – a special Mass gave a new slant on the phrase ‘active participation’! Employing the talents of all pupils, the Mass had the usual full compliment of servers but also a polyphonic choir (singing a communion motet) and an augmented schola. The celebration was preceded by the singing of the Christus Vincit in procession.

Running concurrently with the Summer School was a new initiative, the Latin Course for Adults. Where possible, we had the benefit of their company for all events, which added to the warm, enthusiastic atmosphere of the week.

Huge thanks and congratulations are due to Dr and Mrs Joseph Shaw, and to Father Andrew Southwell, for their vision in setting up the Summer School. This initiative is in a league of its own, and is certainly furthering the cause of truly Catholic education in Britain. Ad multos annos!

LMS Walking Pilgrimage to Walsingham

The Latin Mass Society is introducing a walking pilgrimage to Walsingham.

The Latin Mass Society is organising a Walking Pilgrimage from Ely to Walsingham from Friday 20 August to Sunday 22 August. There is a noble tradition of walking pilgrimages to Walsingham which the LMS wishes to revive. The pilgrimage is inspired by the great Paris to Chartres Traditional annual walking pilgrimage which attracts thousands of young participants.

The LMS pilgrims will leave Ely on Friday 20 August after a 7.00 am blessing in Ely Cathedral.

Accommodation will be in tents. There will be daily Mass in the Traditional Latin Rite concluding with a Traditional Mass in the Chapel of Reconciliation at Walsingham at 2.30 pm on Sunday 22 August. This will be open to all.

The pilgrimage will be restricted to adults for this year whilst any practical problems are ironed out. It is hoped it will be much larger next year.

Dr Joseph Shaw, LMS Chairman, said: “I am very excited by this pilgrimage – it’s the sort of practical and challenging devotion which young people in particular find of great benefit. This is just one of the evangelical activities by which the LMS is responding to Pope Benedict’s call for a fresh presentation of the Faith in Europe”.

The Latin Mass Society has announced that Bishop Athanasius Schneider ORC, Auxiliary Bishop of Karaganga in Kazakhstan, will be attending the forthcoming priests’ training conference to be held at Downside Abbey from Tuesday 10th to Friday 13th August. Bishop Schneider will celebrate a Solemn Pontifical Mass in the Extraordinary Form in the Abbey Church at Downside on Thursday 12th August at 11.00am. He will also deliver a lecture as part of the conference.

Around 30 priests are expected to attend the conference where tuition will be given in the celebration of Mass in the older form. Some will be beginners, and will be studying Low Mass; whilst others with more experience will be expanding their skills to include Missa Cantata and Missa Solemnis. Tuition will also be provided for altar servers.

Bishop Schneider is best known for his defence of the traditional practice of receiving Holy Communion on the tongue and kneeling. His book, Dominus Est, originally written in Italian but now available in English, deals with this subject in some detail.

The public will be able to attend the 11.00 am Mass in the Abbey Church each day of the conference, but will be particularly welcome at the Pontifical Mass on the Thursday.
